Empowering Young Women: Highlights from the Orange County Fire Authority’s Sixth Annual Girls Empowerment Camp
On September 13 and 14 the Orange County Fire Authority hosted its sixth annual Girls Empowerment Camp (GEC)—delivering yet another unforgettable experience for all involved.
Over two action-packed days, teens ages 14 to 18 stepped into the world of firefighting, gaining firsthand experience in skills that test limits, build confidence, and spark inspiration for the future. Campers faced real-life challenges: climbing ladders, operating fire engines, mastering forcible entry techniques, rappelling, conquering a confidence course, and performing essential EMS skills. Each station offered a glimpse into the demands and rewards of serving in the fire service.
This year also brought an exciting first to the West Coast: campers trained with FLAIM virtual reality (VR) technology. This cutting-edge tool immersed participants in more than 80 realistic firefighting scenarios, featuring heated vests, authentic hose reaction force, and full-scale fire simulations. In a safe and controlled setting, campers experienced the intensity and complexity of firefighting, pushing their skills and confidence even further.
But the weekend was about more than just skills—it was about empowerment. The Girls Empowerment Camp is designed to show young women that they belong in the fire service. Through courage, teamwork, and determination, campers learned that they can be leaders in public safety and help shape a more inclusive future.
GEC remains one of our favorite weekends of the year. Year after year, it proves that the future of firefighting is not only bright and innovative, but also welcoming to all. The next generation of firefighters is ready to lead—with skill, compassion, and a commitment to service. Click here to see photos from the event: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjCvE5B
